Level & Class Descriptions

BABIES and TODDLERS

  • 6 months- 3yrs
  • maximum of 8 in class with parent/carer
  • 30 minutes per lesson

This class is designed to introduce young children to water and swimming. To maximize their swimming potential, children must be happy in and under the water. This class is a special time, where mum or dad (with the help of a teacher) can begin to teach children how to enjoy the water. Through aquaplay, songs and routines the classes encourage children to swim, breathe and submerge comfortably, as well as learn some basic water safety.

BEGINNER 1

  • Maximum of 4 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

Especially for new swimmers and those starting on their own, this class encourages water confidence and independent swimming. The main goals are to swim unassisted for 5m with their face in the water, and relax floating on their back with assistance. Safe pool entries and exits are encouraged.

BEGINNER 2

  • Maximum of 4 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

This class is aimed at children who are confident in the water but have limited stroke experience. Our aim is to streamline the swimmer, introduce ‘big arms’ and floating on their back unaided. For safety the children are also taught breathing in deep water.

LEVEL 1

  • Maximum of 4 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

At this level children begin freestyle breathing and kicking on their back. In the deep end they will confidently jump in the water and swim to the side, as well as keep their head above water.

LEVEL 1-2

  • Maximum of 4 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

In this class we concentrate on improving freestyle to a distance of 15m and begin backstroke arms. Students at this level are taught basic dives and personal water safety.

LEVEL 2

  • Maximum of 4 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

The emphasis here is on correcting freestyle and backstroke technique, building to 25m for both strokes. Components for breaststroke and dolphin kick are introduced. Basic rescues of other swimmers are also taught.

LEVEL 3

  • Maximum of 5 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

This class is for strong swimmers able to swim a length comfortably. Our focus with freestyle and backstroke is to improve distances to 50m. Breaststroke is fully introduced and learned.

LEVEL 4

  • Maximum of 5 in the class
  • 30 minutes per lesson

Significant emphasis is placed on stroke techniques in this level, building to 100m. Breaststroke is refined and butterfly is introduced. Rescue skills, treading water and survival swimming are also practiced.

LEVEL 5

  • Maximum of 6 in the class.
  • 45 minute lesson

As a lead up to squad swimming this group is building up their endurance to distances over 200m. Competitive dives and turns are taught.

SQUAD

  • 60 minute lesson

At this level swimmers are mastering all competitive strokes, starts and turns. Distances up to 1km are swum as well as shorter sprint races.

As part of Squad training (Aquastar Moorabbin ONLY), gym sessions will be incorporated into each terms program.

These sessions will be conducted every third week running for approximately 30 minutes followed by a 20 minute pool session.

The sessions will be held on site @ STAR FITNESS (see link below)

The gym sessions will be designed to minimise and reduce the onset of the predominant injuries within the sport.
