From fear to fun: overcoming swim anxiety in children

Swim anxiety can stop children from enjoying and learning to swim. Our expert guidance fosters confidence and a love for swimming.

Swimming is often considered one of life’s greatest pleasures – as well as an incredibly important life skill – but for some children, the thought of diving into the pool can evoke feelings of fear and apprehension.

Swim anxiety, characterised by nervousness, reluctance, or fearfulness around water, can hinder a child’s ability to learn and enjoy swimming. However, with patience, understanding, and proper guidance, it can be overcome, allowing children to embrace the water with confidence and joy.

           Understanding The Source

First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand the root causes of swim anxiety in children. For some, it may stem from a past negative experience, such as a near-drowning incident or feeling overwhelmed in the water. Others may have a fear of the unknown, particularly if they’re uncomfortable with the sensation of water on their face or the feeling of buoyancy. Additionally, children may pick up on the anxiety of parents or caregivers, further exacerbating their own apprehensions. Ultimately, swimming isn’t exactly a natural activity for us humans, and holding one’s breath under water by choice isn’t either!

           Creating A Safe Environment

Creating a safe and supportive environment is essential for helping children overcome swim anxiety. Swim teachers and parents should foster a sense of trust and reassurance, emphasising that it’s okay to feel nervous and that they are there to support them every step of the way. Building rapport with the child and allowing them to progress at their own pace can help alleviate anxiety and build confidence gradually.

           Gradual Exposure

Overcoming anxiety around water isn’t as simple as jumping in the deep end – in fact, this is probably one of the worst things your child can do.

Gradual exposure to water is key, so start with simple activities like sitting by the edge of the pool or dipping toes in the water, allowing them to acclimate to the sensations. Encourage games and activities that involve water play, such as pouring water from cups or playing with floating toys, to help the child feel more comfortable in an aquatic environment. From there, your child can gradually scale up to more challenging activities.

           Breath Control And Floating

Gaining breath control and an ability to float are two tricky skills to acquire initially, but once your child has mastered these, they are likely to feel far less anxious around water. Having the confidence to trust they can control their breathing and their own buoyancy is reassuring. Practise blowing bubbles in the water or using a straw to blow objects across the surface, gradually progressing to breath control while submerging their faces. Floating on their back with support can also help children feel more secure and in control, as they learn to trust the buoyancy of the water and their own bodies.

           Positive Reinforcement

These days, science tells us that positive reinforcement (praising the right action) is far more effective that negative reinforcement (chastising the wrong action) in both animals and children alike. When it comes to learning to swim, the same rule applies!

Positive reinforcement plays a crucial role in overcoming swim anxiety. Celebrate even the smallest victories and accomplishments, whether it’s putting their face in the water for the first time or floating independently. Praise their efforts and perseverance and emphasise that progress takes time and practice. By focusing on the positives and building self-confidence, children can gradually overcome their anxieties and embrace swimming with enthusiasm.

           Seeking Professional Guidance

Overcoming swim anxiety may require the expertise of a qualified swim teacher, and in some cases a child psychologist. Professional teachers with experience in teaching anxious swimmers can provide specialised guidance and support, tailoring lessons to meet the child’s individual needs and pace. Additionally, a child psychologist can offer strategies for managing anxiety and building resilience, both in and out of the water.

If your child is anxious around the pool, don’t worry – it’s a common scenario and usually with the right guidance and a bit of patience, each and every child can become confident and competent in the water. By creating a safe and supportive environment, gradually exposing children to water, and providing positive reinforcement, children can learn to overcome their fears and embrace swimming with confidence and joy.

Building confidence in the water: exercises & drills for beginner swimmers

Conquer your fear of water & enhance your swimming skills with beginner exercises & drills. Improve technique and build confidence with Aquastar.

Embarking on the journey to become a proficient swimmer is an exciting and rewarding endeavour that sets you up for a life enjoying all that the water has to offer – and here in Australia, that’s a lot! Whether you’re looking to conquer your fear of water or aiming to enhance your swimming skills, incorporating a set of well-rounded exercises and drills into your routine is crucial.

So, what exercises and drills are best for building confidence, improving technique, and establishing a strong foundation in the water?

           Breath Control Is Crucial

As a swimmer, learning to coordinate your breathing is crucial. Standing in the shallow end or holding onto the pool edge, start by taking a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly through your nose. Next, practise the exhaling phase underwater by placing your face beneath the surface and blowing bubbles; lift your head to breathe as needed. This may seem basic, but the ability to control your breath and feel comfortable breathing out underwater is an important step for beginner swimmers.

Once you have mastered the art of breathing out underwater, you can begin to introduce cadence to your breathing and simulate how you would breathe while swimming the freestyle stroke. Begin turning your head to the side to inhale, then exhale underwater; practise turning to the left and right, as well as alternating. The idea is to develop a comfortable rhythm that is synchronised with your stroke.

           Master The Art Of Floating

Before delving into learning the basic strokes, it’s essential to master the art of floating. Floating helps build confidence and comfort in the water – and it’s also crucial in terms of water safety. Begin by lying on your back and allowing your body to naturally float. Gradually extend your arms and legs, maintaining a relaxed and buoyant posture. This exercise is fundamental for developing a feel for the water and instilling trust in your ability to stay afloat.

Learning how to float face down is also important. You can begin practising this while holding onto the pool edge: extend your body horizontally in the water, face down while holding your breath, and allow your legs to float up. Focus on relaxing your body and maintaining a horizontal position. As you’re holding on to the pool edge, simply lift your head to breathe and then lower your head and exhale underwater.

           Kickboard Kicking

To build leg strength and improve propulsion, the kickboard is an invaluable tool for beginner swimmers. Hold the kickboard with both hands and extend your arms forward. While keeping your face in the water, kick your legs with a steady, rhythmic motion. Focus on kicking from your hips, not just your knees, to maximise efficiency. This exercise targets the lower body muscles and establishes a strong foundation for various swimming strokes. If you don’t have a kickboard, holding on to the edge of the pool can also work well for this drill.

           Getting A Feel For Freestyle

Freestyle is a fundamental swimming stroke and the starting point for all swimmers. Start by practising the arm movement separately: stand in the shallow end and simulate the freestyle arm motion, emphasising a high elbow recovery. Once comfortable, combine the arm movement with rhythmic breathing as you would have practised earlier during breath control drills. This exercise helps beginners grasp the coordination required for an efficient freestyle stroke.

           Time To Start Swimming

Embarking on the journey to becoming a proficient swimmer requires dedication, patience, and a systematic approach to exercises and drills. The key is to start with the basics, gradually progressing as confidence and skills develop. Breath work, floating, kicking and arm movement drills collectively form a comprehensive foundation for beginner swimmers, with these skills all piecing together to allow for the development of an effective freestyle stroke.

Consistent practice of these exercises will not only enhance swimming abilities but also foster a deep sense of confidence and enjoyment in the water. As with any physical activity, it’s crucial to progress at your own pace, celebrate small victories, and stay committed to the journey of aquatic mastery.

Grating goggles and concerning caps: how to handle common swim lesson challenges

Discover strategies to overcome common swim lesson challenges for your child. Help them gain confidence in the pool with Aquastar Swim Schools.

There are many reasons why children are enrolled in swimming lessons: learning to swim is a valuable life skill, fun recreational activity, and great for both physical and mental health.

However, when a child first starts out in the pool there are common challenges that many parents face, from water anxiety through to a dislike of swim caps and goggles. The good news is these are common challenges and nothing that cannot be overcome!

           The Goggle Dilemma

Goggles are important for protecting your eyes from chlorine and other pool chemicals, but some children dislike wearing them for various reasons. Here’s how to handle the goggle challenge:

            Proper fit:

Make sure the goggles fit snugly but not too tight. Encourage your child to try on different styles and sizes to find the most comfortable pair.

            Introduction:

Gradually introduce goggles during swim practice by wearing them for short periods, so your child becomes accustomed to the sensation.

            Fun designs:

Choose goggles with fun designs or colours to make them more appealing, especially for children.

            Anti-fog and UV protection:

Foggy goggles won’t stay on your child’s head long! Invest in high-quality goggles that have anti-fog and UV protection features, as these can enhance the swimmer’s experience.

            Role modelling:

Parents and swim teachers can set a positive example by wearing goggles themselves, demonstrating their importance.

           Coping With Cap Concerns

Swim caps are designed to reduce drag and keep hair away from the face – as well as save you the pain of washing chlorine from your child’s hair after each swim session! However, some children may find their snug fit “too tight” while others might baulk at the feeling of the rubber gripping their hair. So, what can be done about these concerns?

            Proper technique:

Teach your child how to put on a swim cap correctly. Start by folding the cap in half and then stretching it over the head. It should fit snugly without being too tight.

            Hair preparation:

Wetting the hair before putting on the cap can make the process easier. For longer hair, consider a swim bun or braid to keep it contained. A bit of preparation here helps to prevent hair being gripped and pulled; if you can prevent that from the outset, you’re reducing the risk of cap concerns developing!

            Different materials:

Explore different cap materials such as silicone or latex to find the most comfortable option for your child.

            Fun patterns:

Like goggles, many swim caps come in various patterns and colours, so let your child choose something that appeals to them.

           Navigating Water Anxiety

“Too tight” googles and caps aside, one of the most common challenges when first introducing children to swim lessons is water anxiety. Let’s face it: humans are land mammals, and swimming is a skill that must be learnt. It’s not second nature to us. With this being the case, it’s to be expected that some children will feel apprehensive about jumping into the water. So, if your child isn’t keen to get in the pool, how can this be overcome?

            Start slowly:

Gradually introduce your child to the water by beginning in shallow areas where they can touch the bottom. Building confidence in children is about creating stepping stones to the overall goal; it’s not recommended to simply “throw them in the deep end” so to speak.

            Positive reinforcement:

Praise and encourage swimmers to build their confidence. Small achievements should be celebrated; again, it’s about creating smaller, achievable goals that gradually help them work towards the main goal.

            Make it fun:

Much like colourful caps and glitzy goggles, making time in the pool fun and relaxed is a great way to build confidence and enjoyment. Incorporate enjoyable water games to make the experience less intimidating.

            Relaxation techniques:

Teach deep-breathing exercises to help children stay calm and relaxed in the water.

Enrolling your child in swim lessons with a qualified teacher is the best way to help them acquire the skills they need to stay safe and have fun around water. Quite often, a cap or goggle dilemma can be resolved by simply being around other children who are wearing them in the same lesson, or some gentle encouragement from the teacher. Other common concerns such as general water anxiety will often resolve over time as children become more comfortable in the pool.

The importance of breath control in swimming: how to improve your technique

Proper breath control is essential for effective swimming. Discover techniques to enhance your swimming performance and endurance.

There are many aspects to becoming a great swimmer. Stroke style and fitness are important elements, and in the case of competitive swimming, natural aptitude and talent also go a long way. However, there is another fundamental aspect of swimming that is often overlooked: proper breath control.

Practising proper breath control plays a crucial role in optimising your swimming efficiency; when you exhale underwater and inhale at the right moments, your body remains streamlined, reducing drag and enabling smooth propulsion through the water. Effective breath control also allows you to maintain a steady rhythm and balance during your strokes, leading to improved overall technique – and it also minimises fatigue. In addition, conscious breath control while swimming encourages mental focus and relaxation. When you concentrate on your breathing pattern, you divert your attention away from distractions and negative thoughts, and instead promote a state of calm and concentration. Not only is this beneficial to your swim training, but it can also help alleviate anxiety and improve overall mental well-being. Like many sports, swimming is great for your mental health – and working on your breath control technique only serves to enhance this benefit!

So, How Do You Improve Your Breath Control Technique?

Practice rhythmic breathing: Develop a consistent pattern of inhaling and exhaling that suits your stroke and swimming style. Common techniques include bilateral breathing (breathing every three strokes) or unilateral breathing (breathing only to one side).

Exhale underwater: Blow out slowly and consistently while your face is submerged, ensuring you expel all the air from your lungs before quickly inhaling during the recovery phase.

Incorporate breath control drills: Engage in specific drills that focus on breath control, such as breathing every five strokes or incorporating breath-holding exercises.

Increase lung capacity: Engage in regular cardiovascular exercises, such as running or cycling, to strengthen your respiratory muscles and improve your lung capacity. Effective cross training is the secret weapon of many athletes across a variety of sports!

Relax and stay calm: Practise meditation or visualisation techniques to calm your mind and reduce anxiety, allowing for better breath control.

           Breathe Easy!

Mastering breath control in swimming is essential for enhancing technique, increasing endurance, and promoting mental focus. By incorporating these tips into your training routine, you can improve your breath control skills, ultimately leading to more efficient and enjoyable swimming sessions. Remember, practice and patience are key to achieving success in the water.

Are swimming lessons Compulsory in Australia? Discover why swim skills are essential for safety and social inclusion.

Swimming skills are extremely important for children and adults in water-loving Australia. Not only do these skills save lives, they also ensure social participation and inclusion year-round.

Based on results from a study conducted by Royal Life Saving Australia, approximately 1 in 5 children are unable to swim the length of an Olympic swimming pool by the time they finish primary school. This shows that swimming skills among children are unacceptably low for a nation surrounded by water.

Most states have a compulsory school swimming program. In fact, Queensland is the only state in the country that does not run a compulsory or comprehensive State Government-funded swimming program in primary schools. In Victoria, the Swimming in Schools program is designed to ensure children develop the required water safety skills before leaving primary school. The program is intended to ensure all students, regardless of background or socio-economic status gain the requisite skills needed under the Victorian Water Safety Certificate. Children complete the certificate when they can swim 50m continuously, answer water safety questions and perform simple rescues.

Swimming in Schools is funded by the Victorian government, which helps to support schools in implementing the program.

However, there is a strong argument that the school swimming programs are not enough to ensure Victorian kids have water safety skills. The end requirements of the program are not particularly challenging, and the lack of regularity in the program means that kids may lose their skills rapidly, if not maintained with outside swimming practice.

Like other states, private swimming lessons are not compulsory in Victoria, and often are only undertaken when parents have the time, money, and local facilities available to them. Many children in rural or remote areas, from diverse backgrounds or low socio-economic circumstances miss out on private swimming lessons, which makes developing the necessary water safety skills challenging. Although school swimming is a commendable program, it is no replacement for regular weekly swimming lessons.

Unfortunately, Queensland state primary schools are required to offer a water safety and swimming program, but participation is not compulsory. Parents can choose whether their child should participate. For the sunniest Australian state this seems particularly dangerous, given the overall easy access to water in Queensland. Many groups are lobbying for change in this area, citing a high number of unacceptable drownings that have occurred due to weak swimming skills.

While private swimming lessons are in no way compulsory, they are widely regarded as the best way to ensure your child has the survival skills needed in the water. We recommend starting your child in lessons as early as possible, and ensuring regular and consistent lessons until they are competent in the water.

How to train for your first triathlon: incorporating swimming into your triathlon plan

Prepare effectively for your first triathlon with our expert training tips. Build your swimming, cycling, and running skills for a successful race.

Training for a triathlon can be an exciting and challenging endeavour, especially if you’re new to the sport. One of the three components of a triathlon is swimming, and the distances involved can be intimidating for many beginners.

The distance you’re required to swim will depend on the triathlon level you plan to enter: a Sprint event includes a 750m swim; an Olympic or Classic event involves a 1500m swim; a Long Course/Half Iron Distance calls for a swim of between 2500m and 3800m; and a full Iron Distance race requires you to swim 3800m. Now those distances might sound daunting, but the good news is you can ease into the sport – a Novice level triathlon in Australia includes a swim of less than 750m, and this is an attainable goal that can be reached by most people with the right training plan and approach.

           Start With A Swim Assessment

Before diving into your training plan, it’s essential to assess your current swimming ability, as this will help you determine where you stand and set realistic goals. While you may have a fair idea of your fitness and general comfort level in the water, it can be difficult to self-evaluate your swimming technique. If you’re new to swimming or struggle with proper form, it’s worth considering taking swimming lessons or working with a swim coach to improve your technique.

           Establish A Regular Training Schedule

Consistency is key when it comes to swimming. Aim to swim at least two to three times a week, gradually increasing the duration and intensity of your workouts as you progress. Establish a swim schedule that works best for you, considering your other training activities (including the other elements of your triathlon, running and cycling) and personal commitments. Consistency will help you build strength, endurance, and muscle memory.

           Incorporate Interval Training

To build endurance and speed, include interval training in your swimming workouts. Intervals involve alternating between high-intensity efforts and recovery periods. For example, you could swim a set distance or time at a challenging pace, followed by a shorter recovery period. This type of training helps improve cardiovascular fitness and prepares you for the demands of the race.

           Focus On Technique

Once you’ve had someone evaluate your swim technique and identify the areas you’ll need to work on, it’s important to make that a focus of your training sessions alongside the fitness aspect. Efficient swimming technique can make a significant difference in your overall performance; fitness will get you a long way, but an efficient swim style is the other half of the equation. Spend dedicated time in each swimming session focusing on improving your form. Work on proper body alignment, a relaxed and efficient breathing pattern, and a strong and steady kick. Consider incorporating drills, such as kickboard or pull buoy exercises, to isolate and improve specific aspects of your technique.

           Practise Open Water Swimming

Triathlons usually take place in open water, which can be vastly different from swimming in a pool. It’s crucial to acclimatise yourself to open water conditions to ensure a smooth race day experience. Find a nearby lake, river, or ocean and practise swimming in open water regularly. Get comfortable with sighting, navigating through waves or currents, and swimming in a group of other athletes. Of course, safety comes first here – choose safe places to swim, ideally where lifeguards are on duty, and never swim alone.

It’s also a good idea to incorporate other ‘race day conditions’ into your training, such as transitioning from the water to a ride or a run and vice versa. This will help you to adapt and build race-day specific fitness.

           Dive In!

Once you’ve worked towards your first triathlon and ticked a Novice race off the list, you’ll probably find – like many – that you’ll aspire to complete other triathlon grades. Whether you’re keen to improve your Novice or Sprint times, or have dreams of ticking the famed Hawaiian Iron Man off your bucket list, careful and considered swim training in incremental steps will help you work towards your ultimate goal.

Swimming for relaxation: how swimming can help you destress and relax

Find relaxation and reduce stress with swimming. Perfect for all ages to enhance physical and mental health.

In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, finding effective ways to destress and relax is crucial for maintaining good physical and mental health. One such activity that offers numerous benefits for adults and children alike is swimming. Alongside its physical benefits, swimming is a therapeutic exercise that can provide a much-needed escape from the daily pressures of life.

So, how can swimming help you destress and relax?

           Release Those Endorphins!

Endorphins are neurotransmitters known as “feel-good” chemicals that help reduce stress, boost mood, and induce a sense of well-being. It’s no secret that engaging in any form of physical exercise stimulates the release of endorphins in the brain, and swimming is no exception. With its full-body workout, swimming can therefore lead to a natural mood elevation and can leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

A Low-Impact Exercise That Reduces Stress On The Body

While there are many physical activities that assist in endorphin release and therefore ease mental stress, some forms of exercise can be quite stressful on your body!

As a low-impact exercise, swimming places minimal stress on the body compared to activities like running or weightlifting. The buoyancy of the water supports the body, reducing strain on joints, tendons, and ligaments, making swimming an ideal exercise for individuals with injuries or conditions such as arthritis. In addition, the smooth and flowing movements of swimming can also help improve flexibility and posture, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.

Water Immersion Offers Natural Stress Relief

Swimming is a natural stress reliever due to the soothing environment of the water, which can have a therapeutic effect on the body and mind. Immersing oneself in water can promote a sense of tranquillity and calmness, as the feeling of weightlessness alleviates the pressure on joints and muscles, promoting relaxation.

The sound and sensation of water can have a soothing effect, acting as a natural form of white noise that aids relaxation, while the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the water can enhance blood circulation, decrease inflammation, and promote better sleep. The coolness of the water can also provide relief from hot weather, helping to regulate body temperature and reduce stress.

Furthermore, the rhythmic movements of swimming can induce a meditative state, allowing you to clear your mind and focus on the present moment, creating a break from stressors.

The combination of endorphin release, the low-impact nature of swimming, and the naturally therapeutic effect of water make it an ideal activity for reducing stress and promoting overall well-being.

The best gear for beginner swimmers: what you need to get started

Ensure a safe and comfortable start with the right gear for beginner swimmers. Our guide helps you choose essentials for enjoyable pool experiences.

As a beginner swimmer, it’s important to have the right gear to make your experience in the water safe and comfortable. For children in particular, first experiences at the pool can influence their confidence and how they relate to the water moving forward; in short, you want to ensure that first experience is enjoyable!

Here are some essential items to consider:

           Swimsuit:

Choose a swimsuit that is comfortable, fits well and allows for free movement. Look for a suit that is made of a stretchy, quick-drying material like nylon or polyester, and if you’re likely to be spending the majority of your time in an outdoor pool, consider a design that provides good coverage and is UV rated. If you’re someone who swims often, two swimsuits are a good idea so that you always have a dry one ready to go – there is nothing worse than pulling on wet bathers!

           Goggles:

Goggles are a must-have for any swimmer, especially beginners who may not be used to opening their eyes underwater. For children, getting water (especially highly chlorinated pool water) in their eyes may be a part of the experience they struggle with – so ensuring they are comfortable in that respect from the get-go will help ensure they are comfortable and relaxed in the water. Look for a pair of goggles that fit well and have anti-fog lenses, as there’s nothing worse than having to take your goggles off to rinse them repeatedly!

           Swim cap:

A swim cap can help keep your hair out of your face while swimming, for greater comfort and fewer distractions. When children are in the water and following their swim teacher’s instructions, the fewer distractions the better! A swim cap also protects hair from the chlorine in the pool; while the odd swim won’t harm your hair, if you’re someone that’s in the water a lot you’ll be well aware that it doesn’t exactly promote hair health. Look for a cap that is made of silicone or latex and fits snugly on your head.

           Swim bag:

A swim bag is essential for carrying all your gear to and from the pool. Look for a bag that is waterproof and has enough compartments to keep your gear organised – for example, you don’t want wet bathers sharing a compartment with a dry change of clothes. When you’re in the after-school rush and heading to a swim class, it’s handy to have a dedicated bag that’s already packed so you can grab and go.

           Kickboard:

There are many different tools that can help a beginner swimmer, however a kickboard is probably the most versatile and useful; its primary use is to practise kicking technique and build leg strength. Here at Aquastar Swim Schools we have equipment such as kickboards on hand for use in our classes, however if you’re planning on a little extra practice in your own time it may be useful to purchase your own. Look for a lightweight, buoyant board that is easy to hold onto.

Remember, while these items can be helpful, the most important thing for a beginner swimmer is to practise consistently and work on building their technique and endurance in the water. Here at Aquastar Swim Schools, we offer lessons that cater to a wide range of ages and abilities – and we even have beginner swim classes for adults!

The importance of proper swim technique for children

Teaching proper swim technique boosts children's water safety and confidence. Learn benefits and how lessons build essential skills.

Most children love spending time in the water; it’s an enjoyable social activity, not to mention the perfect way to cool down on a hot day! However, there is more to swimming than simply having fun and keeping cool – and many of these additional benefits are unlocked by learning how to swim using correct technique.

           Proper Technique Saves Lives

It’s no secret that lifeguards are well-versed in correct swimming techniques; being confident and efficient in the water is essential when it comes to saving lives.

For children, learning correct technique helps them to move more efficiently through the water, stay afloat and breathe correctly, all of which reduce their risk of becoming exhausted and drowning in an emergency scenario.

           Improved Confidence

As children learn how to move efficiently and gracefully through the water, they will feel more at ease and in control of their movements – ultimately resulting in greater confidence. This increased self-assurance will not only help them in turn become better swimmers, but also boost their self-esteem and overall sense of wellbeing. Having confidence in their swimming ability through correct technique is important in social situations, as it allows children to participate in a far wider range of water-based activities.

           Improved Physical Health

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise that helps to build strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness. However, to reap the maximum benefits of swimming, it is essential to use proper swim technique; this ensures that children are using the correct muscles and movements, which reduces the risk of injury and allows them to get the most out of their swim sessions.

Proper technique also makes time in the water more comfortable and enjoyable, increasing the likelihood of children adopting the activity for life – whether they take up swimming as a sport, for general fitness, or perhaps they’ll join the ‘Iceberger’ ranks and take up open-water swimming as a therapeutic pursuit! Either way, adopting a physical activity for life is a great way to maintain good health.

           Open Up Sporting Pathways

Not everyone aspires to be an Olympic swimmer, but the truth is you never know what your potential is at any given sport unless you give it a go! By supporting your child to learn correct technique in the pool, it provides the opportunity for talent to be unearthed. Of course, your child may be more than content as the fastest kid in their swim class without feeling the need to push their talent further – but for some kids, the discovery of a sporting gift, when combined with a passion for the sport, can set an exciting journey in motion!

           A Focus On Technique

Proper swim technique is essential for children to develop strong swimming skills, stay safe in and around water, and reap the many physical and mental benefits of swimming. Parents should encourage their children to learn proper technique and provide them with access to high-quality swimming instruction.

Fun games and activities

Make learning to swim fun with engaging games and activities for children. Build confidence, water safety and stroke skills at Aquastar Swim Schools.

Children learn best when they are having fun – don’t we all! Learning to swim is no exception, and while spending time in the pool is inherently fun for most kids, turning the learning component into a game or activity often helps them pick up those key skills just that little bit quicker.

And for kids that find the pool a bit intimidating? Playing games in the water can help build their confidence and comfort level. Games are motivating; they make learning fun and engaging, which can encourage kids to participate in the lessons and be more willing to learn new skills. It’s also possible to design games to focus on specific swimming skills, such as diving, treading water, or swimming strokes, allowing kids to practice and improve these skills in a fun and interactive way.

Here, We Take A Look At Some Popular Pool Games…

           Balloon Games:

Blow up balloons and have the kids try to move them around in the pool. This will help them improve their buoyancy and treading water skills. For beginner swimmers, this game can be played in a shallow pool so they can build confidence moving through the water.

           Marco Polo:

A classic pool game that is perfect for swim lessons. Have the kids follow the leader and improve their swimming skills while having fun.

           Diving for Rings:

Place rings at the bottom of the pool and have the kids dive down to retrieve them. This will help them build their diving skills and confidence.

           Duck, Duck, Goose:

A classic game that can be played in the pool. This will encourage the kids to swim and improve their coordination.

           Treasure Hunt:

Hide underwater toys and have the kids search for them. This will encourage them to swim and improve their underwater skills.

           Water Tag:

A fun variation on the classic game of tag, where the kids chase each other through the water. This will encourage them to swim and build their endurance.

           Noodle Jousting:

Give the kids pool noodles and have them joust with each other. This will help them build their balance and coordination.

           Ball Toss:

Have the kids toss a ball to each other while swimming. This will help them improve their swimming skills and coordination.

           Swimming Sprint:

Have the kids race to the other side of the pool and back. Another game with a competitive spin, it will help them build their speed and endurance.

           Relay Races:

For more experienced swimmers, divide them into teams and have them race each other. You can include different strokes and techniques to make it more challenging and educational.

By making swim lessons enjoyable through games, kids are more likely to participate, engage, and learn the important skills needed for safe swimming. Additionally, games can help kids develop a lifelong love of the water. Here at Aquastar Swim Schools, we’re all about ensuring swimming lessons are enjoyable for everyone!

The benefits of early swim education for children

Start swimming lessons early for your child. Enhance water safety, physical development, and mental wellbeing with our expert swim education.

Like many things in life, the earlier you begin swimming lessons the better. Swimming is a valuable skill that provides numerous benefits for children – not only does it assist with water safety and drowning prevention, but it also benefits physical development and fitness as well as mental wellbeing.

Starting swim education at an early age can help children develop physically, mentally, and emotionally – and when you hit the water sooner, the easier it is to become a natural and proficient swimmer.

           Why Start Early?

Water Safety: Drowning is a leading cause of death for children, making water safety an essential part of their education; in fact, it really is the number one reason to begin your child’s swimming lessons sooner rather than later. Swim lessons can teach children how to be safe around water and how to swim, helping to prevent accidents and save lives.

           Physical Development:

Swimming is a great form of physical activity that helps children develop strength, flexibility, and coordination. It can also improve their cardiovascular health and overall fitness. The added benefit? It’s tiring… so when you return home from swimming lessons you can rest assured there’ll be at least a moment of peace in the house!

           Confidence Building:

Swimming can be intimidating for some children, however, taking swim lessons can help build their confidence in the water. They will learn new skills and gain a sense of accomplishment, which can boost their self-esteem and overall confidence. Long term, a strong swimming ability opens doors and allows kids to say ‘yes’; pool parties, surf camps, swimming carnivals… all of these fun events are within reach when a child can swim.

           Stress Relief:

Like many other forms of exercise, swimming can be a relaxing and stress-relieving activity. It can help children to release tension and reduce stress, which is important for their overall mental and emotional health. There’s nothing like that post-exercise release of endorphins!

           Socialisation:

Swim lessons provide a great opportunity for children to socialise and make new friends. They’ll be participating in group activities and will therefore have the chance to interact with other children their own age, which can help to improve their social skills and relationships. In the age of the internet, opportunities for real-life interactions and friendships are more important than ever for our children.

           Lifelong Skill:

Swimming is a skill that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Learning to swim at a young age can help children to develop a lifelong love of the water and can provide them with the skills they need to stay safe and enjoy water activities. Throughout every stage of our lives, an ability to swim can open so many doors; unlocking that access from an early age sets a child up for a lifetime of enjoying the water.

In conclusion, early swim education provides numerous benefits for children. It can help to develop physical, mental, and emotional skills, as well as provide a lifelong skill and a source of recreation. If you are considering enrolling your child in swim lessons, consider the many benefits and start early for the best outcomes.

Three benefits of wearing swimming goggles

Learn the benefits of wearing swimming goggles. Enhance your vision, protect your eyes, and improve your overall swimming experience.

No doubt you’ve tried opening your eyes underwater, whether it be in the local pool or at the beach; your vision was probably a blur and your eyes were probably left stinging. While some people’s eyes cope with a dose of chlorine or salt better than others, the truth is humans are generally far more comfortable when their eyes are not exposed to pool or ocean water. It’s probably something to do with the fact we evolved as land mammals.

If you’re spending time in the water – whether it’s swimming lessons at the pool or open water swim training at the beach – it pays to invest in a good pair of goggles. The benefits are three-fold…

           1. Protect Your Eyes From Irritants

Whether it’s salt water at the beach or chlorine it the pool, exposing your eyes to the water while swimming can be uncomfortable and leave them feeling less than fresh afterwards. Salt water can sting your eyes, while chemicals such chlorine can make them red and itchy. Goggles provide a protective physical barrier, and when correctly fitted they stop water getting into your eyes – not only eliminating irritation, but also reducing the chance of developing an eye infection or ‘dry eyes’.

If you are often swimming outdoors, it’s also a good idea to consider goggles that offer sun protection – much like sunglasses. Water is highly reflective to the sun’s rays, and when you’re surrounded by it is really when your eyes need protecting most. Look for goggles with a UV rating.

           2. A Confidence Booster

For children in particular, goggles are a great confidence booster. The discomfort of opening their eyes underwater without goggles can be a deterrent and negatively impact their progress in the pool; make the experience comfortable and positive, and they are more likely to enjoy it and develop a love of the water.

           3. Enjoy Clearer Vision

If you have ever tried opening your eyes underwater, you’ll know that it can be quite hard to see. Even in the clear waters of a swimming pool, your vision is unlikely to be great; humans simply aren’t designed to see well underwater.

Wearing goggles keeps the water out of your eyes and means it’s much easier to see. In a pool, this means you’ll spot the wall much earlier, as well as other people in the pool. In open water like the ocean, you’ll be able to more easily spot any obstacles or hazards, which is important from a safety perspective.

If you’re someone who normally wears glasses, it is possible to purchase prescription goggles – allowing you to enjoy better vision in the water. It’s not advisable to wear contact lenses in the water due to the risk of eye infection and irritation, but if well-fitting goggles are worn over the top to prevent water entering the eye, this is also another option for those with less than 20-20 vision.

           Goggles Are The Go!

If your child is about to start swimming lessons – or if you’re planning to take the plunge yourself – it’s a good idea to come equipped with a well-fitting pair of goggles. Not only do they protect your eyes and allow you to see more clearly underwater, but they actually make the whole experience far more enjoyable!

The importance of water safety for young children

Water safety is crucial for young children to prevent drowning accidents. Learn effective strategies to keep your child safe around water.

Twenty seconds is all it takes for a child to drown. It’s a scary figure, and it’s the reason children need to be taught water safety from an early age.

Many fatal drownings happen at home, from backyard pools to bathtubs and dams; in fact, any body of water that is five centimetres or more in depth can pose a risk. It’s often a lack of supervision combined with inadequate safety barriers that contribute to tragedy, as it’s easy to lose concentration for 20 seconds on a hot day by the pool – and an ill-placed Esky by the fence can quickly become an unwitting step-ladder. Accidents can happen despite best intentions, and if they do you want to ensure your child has some awareness around water and is equipped with basic water safety skills. It could be the difference between life or death; even children that survive near-drowning incidents can remain affected long-term.

           Toddlers Are Most At Risk

Children between the ages of one and four years old are the most at risk when it comes to drowning, as they are mobile but not always equipped with any water safety skills. Constant supervision around water is essential, but it’s also critical that the child has an understanding of how to handle themselves around water. Basic skills such as kicking, floating and even just an awareness to keep their head above water can provide a literal breather and while the child may not yet be old enough to swim to safety, it could give them valuable extra seconds – providing a greater window to be rescued.

At Aquastar Swim Schools, we offer courses for children of all ages – including this particularly at-risk age group. Our infant classes cover children from six months to three years of age, and while toddlers won’t be cutting laps like a pro, they can certainly gain crucial water safety skills that can make all the difference in an emergency scenario.

           Water Safety With Aquastar

So what exactly takes place during infant swim classes? Early classes focus on introducing babies to the water and ensuring they are comfortable, helping them to develop awareness and confidence. Breath control, kicking, and floating are all introduced. From 12 months of age, more structured classes can help with a child’s body position in the water and teach them how to submerge themselves, initiate independent movement and develop kicking skills. From two years of age, there is greater emphasis on developing independence, getting in and out of the water by themselves, and even swimming some distance alone. From here, children graduate to Aquastar’s progressive swim classes where swimming and water safety skills are further developed and honed.

It’s important to remember that young children may not be able to rely on their swimming skills to get themselves out of trouble, even after having lessons; the acquisition of water safety knowledge should never replace proper supervision. However, basic water safety from an early age is an important aspect of keep young children safe and should not be overlooked.

3 ways you can increase the distance you can swim

Learn how to swim further with our 3 effective tips. Enhance your freestyle technique for greater distance and efficiency in the pool.

Swimming longer distance doesn’t necessarily come naturally to humans; after all, we’re land animals. However, it’s possible to train the body to swim further. Here are three tips to increase the distance you’re swimming in the pool…

           1. Improve Your Stroke

Improving your stroke is an effective way to help you swim further in the pool. Long-distance swimmers use freestyle, as it’s the most energy efficient and quickest stroke; the good long-distance swimmers have perfected their freestyle to maximise efficiency, allowing them to swim further.

Ideally, you should use a ‘round arm’ freestyle stroke (which falls between a ‘straight arm’ and ‘bent arm’ stroke). To achieve this, visualise your arm hugging an exercise ball; your arm should then enter the water at a slight angle. As with all freestyle strokes, once underwater your arm will be straight – and then during the recovery phase, you create the same shape from the first step.

When it comes to your legs, they should be working at a similar rate and utilise a two-beat kick in rhythm with your arm strokes – i.e. you should be kicking once per stroke cycle. For example, as your right hand enters the water, your left arm will circle, completing the stroke; that’s when you should kick your left leg, alternating as you swim. Powering your kicks from your hips rather than your knees gives greater speed and uses less energy, while deep and relaxed breathing is also a critical component to a good long-distance stroke.

           2. Build Up Your Swimming Fitness Slowly And Steadily

To swim a greater distance, you of course need to build up your swimming fitness – and like anything else fitness-related, it always pays to do this slowly and steadily. Pushing too hard, too quickly can lead to injury and burnout; rest days are important. Aim to be consistent with the days you do swim.

Improving stamina doesn’t necessarily have to come from increasing the total distance you swim or the hours you spend in the pool each week (although this of course helps). By switching up your sets to swim longer distances but with lower repetitions, you can improve your ability to swim further. For example, instead of doing an 8×50m set, do a 4×100m, and then do a 2×200m, and work your way up to a 400m.

           3. Cross-Train Out Of The Pool

The best athletes don’t become the best at what they do solely by practising their exact sport day in day out (although they of course do a lot of that). Top athletes all cross-train to gain fitness and reduce repetitive wear and tear. Formula 1 drivers all work on fitness away from their cars, AFL players cover plenty of kilometres running… and swimmers are no different. Working on your arms, back, core, and legs at the gym, and running to improve cardio fitness can all help a swimmer improve their endurance in the pool.

3 tips to swim safely at the beach

Stay safe while swimming at the beach with our top tips. Always choose patrolled beaches and swim between red and yellow flags.

Living in a country surrounded by ocean, chances are you’re likely to spend a bit of time at the beach each summer. Here are three tips to make sure you’re swimming safely…

           1. Choose Patrolled Beaches

The number one way to stay safe when swimming at the beach – not surprisingly – is to choose patrolled beaches and swim between the red and yellow flags. This is safer for two reasons: the red and yellow flags have been carefully placed in the safest section of the beach, for example often on a sand bank where there are no rips, rocks or other dangers; and the beach is patrolled by trained lifeguards who are on hand to help should you get into any trouble in the water.

It’s important to always follow the direction of lifeguards at these beaches, as they know the beach better than anyone and are there to keep you safe. You should also adhere to any signage; it’s not only important to swim between the flags, but also to stay out of the water if there are signs indicating that the beach is closed or that potential hazards exist. If in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and keep your feet on dry sand. Remember, you can always swim another day!

           2. Never Swim Alone

Even if you are a strong and confident swimmer, the fact remains that the ocean is unpredictable. Strong currents, changing weather conditions, king waves, hidden rocks… there are many variables in the ocean, and so when you’re swimming at the beach it’s important to make sure you never swim alone. If something does go awry, it’s helpful to have someone else at hand that can raise the alarm.

           3. Learn To Recognise Rips

While swimming between the flags at patrolled beaches is a sure-fire way to avoid rips, it’s always handy to be able to spot them yourself. Rip tides are often characterised by deeper, darker water, fewer breaking waves, obvious water movement and also sandy water that extends beyond the surf zone, indicating that water is being quickly carried away from the beach. Often people get into trouble swimming in rips as they may look like a calmer section of the beach, compared to the sand banks with crashing waves – however the reason they can appear like this is because of the strong current pulling water back out to sea. Swimming on the sand banks where the waves are breaking – assuming they are not a dangerous size – is the safest option. The waves might knock you over, but they’ll be pushing you towards the beach rather than sucking you out to the back of the surf!

Of course, learning how to swim properly and knowing how to float and tread water are all precursors to having a safe and enjoyable time at the beach. The best way to acquire sound water skills is to have lessons with a professional swim teacher, who can give you the tools you need to stay safe at the beach.
How long does it take adults to learn to swim?

It's never too late to learn how to swim. Explore our insights on learning to swim as an adult.

Learning how to swim is an important life skill that many of us acquire as children – however, not everyone has the opportunity to do so. The good news is that it’s never too late to learn how to swim and given the correct tuition, adults can easily acquire the necessary skills.

However, when it comes to the question of ‘how long does it take’, the answer varies. This is because as humans we are all individuals and therefore our ability to pick up a skill such as swimming depends on variables such as basic athletic ability, fitness, co-ordination skills and also mental components such as a fear of the water.

What Are The Steps Involved In Learning To Swim?

The road to learning basic swimming skills begins with gaining water confidence, and as you might expect this factor varies a lot from person to person. Generally, an adult who has never learnt to swim is going to harbour some anxiety about entering the water – however, this is only natural and there is generally no reason why it cannot be overcome.

Once you’re confident in the water, it’s then on to learning basic, fundamental skills such as floating, how to control your body in the water, treading water, how to kick and more. Once these skills are mastered, it’s simply about putting it all together and working on technique. In most cases, your swim teacher will begin with teaching freestyle stroke, however breaststroke and backstroke are also very handy to learn.

           It Takes Time…

Of course like any new skill, the more often you practice the quicker you will improve. Therefore, consistency is key when it comes to learning to swim. If you can attend swimming lessons regularly – and perhaps even visit the pool in between to practise what you’ve learnt – you’ll find that you improve much quicker. In most cases, adults learner quicker than young children as they already have well-developed motor skills and can more easily interpret and follow instruction. For an adult with no fear of the water or physical limitations, it’s possible to learn how to swim within 20-25 hours of lessons. If you’re having a half-hour lesson weekly, that means you could be swimming within a year. Of course, some people will pick it up far more quickly, while others may need a little more time.

           Quality Instruction Is Key

As with acquiring any new skill, if you have excellent tuition along the way then you are far more likely to succeed and do so in a shorter time frame. Here at Aquastar Swim Schools, our experienced instructors offer

How can I go swimming if I wear glasses?

Discover effective ways to swim comfortably with glasses. Learn tips and solutions at Aquastar Swim Schools today.

In this day and age, many adults and even children wear glasses on a daily basis – whether it be for reading, driving or for general day-to-day activities. When it comes to swimming, bespectacled folk deliberate over the best approach to maintaining good vision in the water; the truth is, it really does come down to the individual!

           Leave The Glasses Poolside

At least in a pool situation, having perfect vision is not essential – so long as you can see well enough to stay safe and have fun. If you’re not heavily reliant on your glasses, then it may well be the case that you can simply leave them poolside when in the water.

           Keep Your Glasses On

Getting in the water with your glasses isn’t ideal, as unlike goggles they obviously won’t keep the water from your eyes. However, if you’re going in for a quick dip and don’t mind water in your eyes, it may work for you. It’s a good idea to purchase a flexible strap – much like the strap on a pair of goggles – that holds your glasses in place and stops them leaving your face and getting lost in the water. The important thing to remember is that while chlorinated pools are okay, salt water pools (and therefore the ocean) have the potential to corrode any metal components of eyewear and even damage the lenses. If you do get salt water on your glasses, always rinse thoroughly in fresh water first before cleaning with a soft cloth.

           Prescription Goggles

The best option for swimmers who can’t live without their glasses is to get a pair of prescription goggles. Depending on your eyesight, you may be able to purchase a pair of ready-made goggles in the correct prescription to suit.

For those with certain prescriptions (usually more than -8.00 or if you have an astigmatism of -1.00) it may be necessary to purchase custom-made goggles through your optometrist. If you’re swimming a lot, it’s likely to be worth the investment!

           Contact Lenses

If you’re a contact lens wearer, it can be tempting to wear them while swimming – however, the general advice is not to. This is because contaminates (such as bacteria) from the pool are more likely to lead to infections when contact lenses are involved; it’s simply not worth the risk to your eye health.

If you absolutely have to, the best way to go about it is to wear securely-fitted goggles over the top of your contact lenses to prevent water entering the eye. In addition, it’s a good idea to wear ‘daily’ disposable lenses that can be removed and discarded after leaving the water.

It Comes Down To The Individual

If you wear glasses there are many ways to ensure you can enjoy time in the water – whether you opt to go glasses-free, get your glasses wet, or don prescription goggles. It’s an individual decision, as everyone is different – however, the good news is there’s no reason why you can’t swim!

What's the difference between swimming in a pool and the ocean

Understand the differences between swimming in a pool and the ocean. Aquastar Swim Schools provide expert guidance for all swimmers.

While most of us learn to swim in a pool, the reality is it’s not the place we’re always going to swim. Surrounded by beautiful Australian beaches means it’s inevitable that the water we spend a large percentage of our time in will likely be the ocean.

So, how does swimming in the ocean differ to swimming in a pool?

           1. Pools Are Often Surrounded By People

Whether you’re at a public pool or in someone’s backyard, chances are there will always be others around – whether they are lifeguards, friends, family or other members of the public. In Australia, some of our beaches can be quite remote, and while some are patrolled by lifeguards and frequented by others during peak times, others can be empty as far as the eye can see. It’s important to remember that in some situations at a beach, there may not be someone within eyesight or earshot to help you should you get into trouble.

           2. The Ocean Can Be Unpredictable

While pools are nearly always consistent in their conditions, from the depth to the temperature, the ocean can change greatly from day to day – and even from one minute to the next. The tide and weather conditions mean the ocean is forever changing, and therefore you should never become complacent and assume you “know” a certain beach.

           3. The Ocean Has Currents And Rips

While a swimming pool is a still body of water, the ocean isn’t. Part of its unpredictability are its currents and rips, which are not always visible before entering the water. Some beaches are more prone to dangerous currents and rough conditions than others (think surf beaches such Gunnamatta versus the city’s bay beaches) and it pays to have an understanding of the possible dangers present before swimming. Even someone who is a strong swimmer in the pool can struggle in a rip if they don’t know how to handle it, so it’s a good idea to not only know how to spot rips at a beach – but also what to do if you become stuck in one you didn’t see.

           4. The Pool Is Usually ‘Humans Only’

While pools are typically restricted to humans only, the ocean is home to nearly 250,000 species of animals, with scientists estimating there could be a million – or more – yet to be discovered. It pays to remember you are sharing with the ocean with others, and while it’s usually not a reason to stay out of the water (unless you’re in Far North Queensland in stinger season or at a beach frequented by saltwater crocodiles), it’s prudent not to pick up a blue ringed octopus, attempt to pat a seal, or remain in the water if you see the Westpac chopper signalling a shark sighting!

           5. Temperature And Visibility

Depending on where you swim and the time of the year, ocean temperatures are often cooler than the average swimming pool – especially here in Victoria. While cold water can actually be good for you, it can be mentally challenging for swimmers and – in extreme circumstances where conditions are very cold – can present issues such as hypothermia if your exposed for too long. It’s also important to remember that ocean is not as clear as pool water, making visibility harder; while in a pool you have a line to follow, swimming in the ocean requires far greater awareness of your surroundings.

           6. The Ocean Delivers Better Buoyancy

If you’re one of those people that finds it hard to float, you’ll be pleased to know that the ocean gives you greater buoyancy thanks to its salt content. When swimming, this means you tend to sit higher in water and floating generally requires less effort. And no, saltwater pools are not the same as the sea – typically, they contain 10 times less salt!

           Awareness Is Key

As a swimmer, the important thing is you’re aware of the differences between swimming in the pool and the ocean. While the sea is inherently less safe, that doesn’t mean it should be avoided; becoming a strong swimmer in the pool, understanding the risks and knowing your ability will all contribute to having a safe and fun experience in the ocean this summer!

5 reasons why floaties are a bad idea

Floaties and water wings can give a false sense of security and may increase risk for young swimmers. Read five reasons to avoid them.

There’s no doubt that in certain situations, floatation devices can save children’s lives in the water. However, when it comes to swim ‘floaties’ – also known as ‘water wings’ – the safety benefits are not as great as they may seem. In fact, it can be quite the opposite.

So why are floaties not such a great idea?

They are not approved safety devices.

‘Water wing’ style floaties are common, but they not an approved flotation device. Why? Because most can easy pop, deflate or break. If this occurs, the child could be at risk – especially if they are very reliant on the floaties to remain above the water.

They give children a false sense of security in the water.

Kids who regularly wear floaties may develop a false sense of security around water and lose their natural wariness of its dangers. This can become an issue when children have access to deep water and are not wearing floaties – especially if they decide to jump in.

They give a false sense of security to parents.

Assuming kids are safe in the water with floaties can lead to parents not watching as closely; should anything happen, such as the floaties deflating, this can prove dangerous.

Floaties don’t encourage a natural swimming position.

When a child wears a set of floaties, it causes them to float vertically in the water; for a human to float unaided (and swim), they must be horizontal. Lying in the water horizontally feels unnatural, but it’s a feeling children must get used to if they are to learn to float and swim unaided.

They don’t necessarily help a child learn to swim.

Many parents believe that if their child learns to ‘swim’ with floaties on, they’ll be able to transfer those skills to swimming without them. The truth is floaties don’t teach children how to swim; good instruction does.

In certain circumstances, floaties and similar sorts of aids can be useful – however, it’s important to always actively supervise your child around water and ensure they spend a greater percentage of their time in the water without them, learning how to float and swim unaided. There is no substitute for swimming lessons, and it’s important to make sure your child is learning how to swim from an early age.

Why do I want to become a swimming instructor?

Explore five compelling reasons to become a swim instructor with Aquastar Swim Schools. Join our team and share your passion for swimming.

If you’ve always harboured an innate love of the water and swimming comes second nature, then chances are you’ve considered becoming a swim instructor. Here at Aquastar Swim Schools, we are often on the look out for new instructors to join the team — and here are five reasons why you should consider it!

           1. Job Satisfaction

Swimming is an important life skill; it not only saves lives, but also improves them through developing greater confidence to enjoy time in the water. As an instructor, there is also the satisfaction of watching students develop and grow in their ability.

           2. Flexibility

Swim teachers are usually employed to work casual hours, and these hours are commonly evenings and weekends. For some, this schedule means they are able to attend university during the day, work in another capacity, or even spend the time enjoying recreational activities.

           3. Communication Skills

Swim teaching is not just about swimming; being an instructor allows you to develop a range of skills that are transferable to many other vocations. When teaching, communication is key — not only in terms of providing students with instructions, but also in terms of building trust and rapport.

           4. Facility Access

If you’re interested in becoming a swimming instructor, chances are you love swimming and perhaps even have goals of your own in the pool. As an instructor, you will have access to AquaStar Swim Schools’ fantastic facilities — giving you the opportunity to spend more time in the water.

While for many swim teaching is a great casual job that fits in well with other activities such as studying, for some it can become a lifelong career. Teaching people how to swim is just the beginning; some instructors decide to go on and become coaches, helping dedicated squad swimmers to learn new strokes, improve their times and reach their competitive goals.

5 questions to ask your swim coach

Selecting the right swim coach is essential. Ask these 5 questions to ensure effective training.

Learning to swim is an important life skill, however for some it becomes a passion. Here at Aquastar Swim Schools, we cater for those who want to take the next step and make swimming their sport with our Squad Program. Catering for more advanced swimmers, is provides a pathway to elite competition and places you amongst like-minded individuals — plus it’s great fun!

When you join our Squad Program, it’s not just about listening and learning; asking questions along the way is an important part of the process and our coaches are always happy to help.

So what sort of questions should you be asking your swim coach?

           1. How Often Should I Train?

This will depend on your age and your aspirations. Swimmers often have to train very regularly, as the muscles they use are so specific. For land-based sports, the most common component is walking and running, which are natural, everyday movements. Humans aren’t exactly made to naturally swim fast, so you’ll need to work at it!

           2. How Do I Know If I’ve Got Natural Talent?

Aquastar Swim Schools’ Squad Program is deigned to identify talent and transition them into a swimming club if that’s something they are interested in — so our coaches have a good eye for ability. Our Squads work through a planned program, which will help to identify if competitive swimming is something members might like to pursue. Not everyone can be an Olympic swimmer, however that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the sport and reach your full potential.

           3. How Do I Know Which Is My Best Stroke?

Developing skills across all four strokes not only makes you a better swimmer, but also helps to identify where your area of talent lies. It could be your current least favourite stroke that eventually becomes your strongest — and consequently, probably also your favourite! Our coaches will be more than happy to talk to you about the importance of swimming all four strokes, as well as how you can determine which one you’re best at.

           4. Do I Need To Undertake Further Fitness Activities Outside Of The Swimming Pool?

While the best way to get “swimming fit” is to swim, there are often activities you can undertake away from the pool that will help you in the water. Your coach best knows your ability, strengths and weaknesses, and so they are best placed to give you this type of advice.

           5. When Am I Ready To Compete?

Competing can be daunting and it’s certainly not for everyone, but if it’s something you’re interested in it can be great fun. Aquastar Swim Schools’ Squad coaches can help you decide when you’re ready to take the plunge and help you find a swimming club that you can compete with.

Why children should wear swimming goggles

Goggles protect children's eyes from chlorine and help them focus in lessons. Aquastar covers fit, hygiene and choosing the right pair.

Goggles can be a great tool for beginner swimmers all the way to experts. Goggles help swimmers see clearly underwater, minimise glare, increase comfort and protect the eyes from water and any chemicals. If your child is just starting to learn how to swim, let them help pick out their first pair of goggles and wear them in the bath to get used to the feel of having them on in the water. Goggles aren’t a necessity for all swimmers but most children feel more comfortable in the water with a pair of goggles on. It is also easier for them to learn in class as they are not being distracted by irritated eyes or closing their eyes underwater and not being able to see where they’re supposed to swim.

Make Sure You Find Goggles That Fit

Goggles need to be tight enough to not leak and let water in but not too tight so your child is uncomfortable or their swimming is hindered. Try them on if possible and check there is a light suction that comes off when the goggles are removed from around the eyes.

Straps & Glass Tints On Goggles

Straps should be placed at eye level or above. Most goggles have one strap that splits in the back for comfort. Try to find goggles with a thicker strap so that it will last longer. Goggles also come in many different tints, including UV tints for outdoor swimming, coloured tints for fashion reasons and glare-reducing tints. Goggles can come with prescription glass too so that you don’t have to try to wear contacts in the water.

           The Cons Of Goggles

There are many more pros to goggles than cons. Goggles can help children with water confidence, improve visibility for safety and keep them from getting red irritated eyes. But it is a very important swimming safety school that your child learns to swim without goggles too. If your child happens to fall to into water they will most likely not be wearing goggles. If they’re used to wearing goggles al the time in the water this will make their situation even more dangerous as they will stress out and not be able to see as clearly as they usually would. If your child’s eyes do get irritated from water/chemicals which causes them to always wear goggles, get them used to not wearing goggles in the bath first. Additionally, show them to blink instead of rub eyes when they get water in them. Rubbing will only irritate it more.

Overall, it is required that students at Aquastar Swim Schools wear goggles while in class. If they’re not wearing goggles, students can tend to close their eyes underwater, hindering their sight and ability to get their technique right.

If your little swimmer lives near one of our locations (St Kilda, Keysborough, Brighton, Moorabbin or Berwick) you could give them a term of swimming in our Learn to Swim lessons or Squad groups. If your little swimmer is just about to start lessons or you know needs a new one of these items, they’ll love these ideas! Every swimmer needs a fun, durable reusable water bottle for their lessons. You could also gift them a new swim bag or backpack to store all their gear.
What is the best swimming stroke?

Compare freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly to find the best stroke for survival, beginners and speed. Read pros, cons and tips.

           Best Stroke For Survival

In survival situations, the main thing is to do is what feels most comfortable for you. Focus on your breathing and try to remain calm. Float as best as you can and try to not over exert yourself. If you want to remain in the same place, try sculling instead of a ‘doggie paddle’ to keep your head above water and assess your situation. The best stroke to swim as far as possible and conserve energy is survival backstroke. Survival backstroke lets you swim long distance while conserving energy and minimising heat loss by keeping your arms and legs together for as long a possible. Keep streamlined to glide until the momentum slows right down. Then you can repeat your stroke. If you need to help someone who can not swim it is best to pull them along while you do a sidestroke to get to safety.

Best Stroke For A Workout

The swimming stroke that helps you use the most calories possible is the butterfly stroke. Butterfly stroke engages your core and uses your upper body strength. Tone up your arms, back and stomach muscles all with the butterfly stroke. Make sure you doing it correctly to avoid straining yourself. When done right, the butterfly can help increase flexibility and improve posture.

If you want a more gentle exercise that can help with back pain and posture, try backstroke. Backstroke helps to lengthen the spine and improve posture. It’s especially great for office workers because it assists in opening up your hips. Backstroke can also target leg, arm and stomach toning.

For a full body workout, freestyle is the best choice. Butterfly stroke does burn more calories but it focuses on the upper body and core. Freestyle is a full aerobic exercise as your legs need to get more involved than in butterfly to power yourself forward. Freestyle also works the best at toning your back muscles out of all of the strokes.

Best Stroke For Long Distance

If you’re wanting to swim lots of laps around the pool, it’s again best to do what you are most comfortable with and make sure to breathe correctly. For most people backstroke, sidestroke or freestyle are the best strokes to use when swimming laps long distance. If you swim your laps in backstroke, try to count the strokes you need to take before you turn so that you don’t hit your head on the edge of the pool.

Best Stroke For Beginners

Typically breaststroke is the first and easiest stroke that beginners learn. This is mainly because the stroke allows you to keep your head above water at all times so that beginners don’t get stressed trying to figure out how to breathe correctly as well. Additionally, backstroke is very easy for beginners to learn, but it can stress them out by not being able to see where they are going and cause accidents.

Best Stroke For Speed

This is a tough one to answer, again it depends on the person and what stroke they excel in. Usually, freestyle is known as the fastest swim stroke. Others say sidestroke (although not a competitive stroke) makes them swim the fastest. The butterfly stroke is also very fast but usually not as fast as freestyle. You have to be quite a coordinated swimmer to achieve a fast stroke in butterfly too.

So What Is The ‘Best’ Overall Stroke?

In short: whatever stroke works best for you!! Every swimmer has their favourite stroke that they feel most comfortable and confident doing. Try out as many stroke styles as you can and you’ll soon find the stroke that you exceed in. You might even have your own favourite stroke that differs for when you swim laps, want to go fast or just for fun.

How swimming can benefit children with special needs

Swimming lessons offer numerous benefits for children with special needs. Explore how with Aquastar Swim Schools.

There are so many benefits for all children who take swimming lessons, but there are even more for children who have special needs.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children & adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Additionally, children with ASD are 160 times more likely to die from drowning compared to a neurotypical child. Learning how to swim is a necessary skill for all children, but especially vital for children with special needs. Wandering, motor skills and sensory overload are just some of the things that can lead to an increased risk of children with special needs drowning. Beyond increasing their safety around water, swimming lessons can help your child with many other surprising benefits.

           Relaxing Therapy And Fun

For many children, water is a soothing environment and has a calming effect thanks to the repetitive motions of water moving around them. With small class sizes or private lessons, there are less distractions swimming when compared to other sports. In other sports, children may feel responsible for the team winning or have to expect a ball being passed to them. During swimming lessons, they can learn at their own pace and have a dedicated teacher who is there to help them progress while having fun.

           Social Skills

Swimming lessons can help children with special needs improve a range of different social behaviours including sharing equipment, cooperating, taking turns, making friends and keeping physical boundaries. Additionally, there have been studies reporting that after aquatic therapy sessions people have found significant improvements in initiating and maintaining eye contact during & after the sessions.

Improvement In Gross Motor Skills & Muscle Strength

It can be hard sometimes to get any child to exercise regularly. Swimming is a fun, low-impact exercise for children with special needs that helps them with coordination, functional strength, endurance and balance.

           Increased Confidence

Learning a new skill like swimming and finding a hobby they really love can significantly boost your child’s confidence and self-esteem!

           Bathers

Of course, these are essential for a swim, Girls in Aquastar classes should wear a one-piece bathing suit while boys wear trunks. Rash vests and board shorts aren’t recommended as they can create drag and make swimming harder!

           Swimming Caps

Swim caps are essential for every swimmer at Aquastar Swim School above child & parent classes. Everyone needs to wear one no matter how short or long your hair. The caps keep your hair out of your face and protect it too. Additionally, they also protect your ears from getting water in them, reduce drag while swimming, protect your head when it’s cold outside the pool. Make sure the swimming cap fits snugly but not too tightly to the point where it hurts. Aquastar branded swimming caps can be bought from our schools if you forget yours and need one before you start class.

           Goggles

Not everyone needs goggles but many children get used to swimming faster with them on. Goggle help to avoid accidents as you can see better while swimming and helps to avoid eye irritation from the pool water.

Stay hydrated guys! Swimming can make you feel like you’re not sweating and exercising as hard as you are, but you do still need to keep your water levels up.

Exercising makes you hungry, plan ahead and bring your child some orange slices, apples & peanut butter, a muesli bar or another healthy snack.

Spare Change Of Clothes Or A Robe

Especially when its cold outside, its best to bring a change of clothes and a warm robe for the walk to the car. You could also bring a beanie and gloves if its extra cold. It’s best not to go home in your bathers straight from class as you should shower after class to remove chlorine and reduce your risk of getting a cold.

Spare Hair Ties, Clips And Wet Brush

Trust us, if your child has long hair this is a lifesaver if accidentally forget to bring hair products, you don’t want to deal with those knots tomorrow!

Learning to swim with fins

Discover how fins can enhance your swimming technique. Improve leg strength and overall performance with our expert guidance.

Fins, otherwise known as flippers, are an essential tool for improving performance and technique. Many swimmers find that they often underutilise their leg power, as their kick is the weakest element of their technique. Fins are the number one way to improve this issue, along with a number of other common problems! Keep reading to find out how to swim with fins, and how to get the most out of them.

           1. Pick The Right Fins

Fins come in many different shapes and sizes – but the main considerations are the length and flexibility. While long fins are great for snorkelling and diving, shorter fins are better adapted to general swimming and training. Ensure your fins fit snugly around the heel, so that there is no chance of them coming off. It can be uncomfortable if they are too tight, so it may be advisable to thoroughly test your fins before you extensively swim.

           2. Start Slow

The additional strain on your ankles and legs may take some getting used to, so there is no need to rush. We recommend starting with small distances, and building up slowly to an entire session.

           3. Technique!

The aim of the game is to improve your technique and swimming style. So, it goes without saying that you need to ensure your technique is strong while using fins. A proper kick takes the form of a ‘flutter’ – it is short and quick. Your legs are basically straight, and the power is generated from your hips. Remember to point your toes! The fins add resistance to the motion, so that you can build muscle and technique.

           4. Don’t Forget Your Stroke

Swimming with fins can allow you to focus on specific areas of your stroke technique, as the added power from the legs makes it easier to identify issues. Make sure you don’t completely forget your arms, as this happens often when using fins. Instead, take careful notice of the movement arc formed by your stroke, and ensure you are making use of every opportunity for speed.

           5. Take Them Off

Many swimmers find it easy to fall into a habit of regularly using fins. While they are a great tool, it is important not to rely on them. Vary your sessions by using other tools such as kickboards and pull buoys, and ensure you are equipment free for at least 50% of your session.

How long does it take to learn to swim?

Learn to swim with Aquastar's expert instructors. Discover the time frame to become a confident and efficient swimmer today.

Becoming a competent swimmer involves much, much more than kicking your legs and moving your arms. A good swimmer moves through the water independently, efficiently, and with technique.

Like anything, learning to swim takes time, energy, patience, and of course, practice practice practice!

Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast answer to the amount of time it takes to learn to swim. It depends on many factors, such as age, prior experience, fitness, and commitment.

For a child or adult, these factors are essential in determining the amount of time needed to become a confident and competent swimmer.

           So What Does It Take?

           Water Confidence

The first step to becoming a swimmer is getting in the water. Many children and adults are uncomfortable beyond standing depth, or have a long held fear of water. Those who are comfortable in the water from the beginning will find it much easier to move through the learning process. Ways to increase water confidence include gradual submersion, using flotation devices, and spending time around water.

           Motor Skills And Fitness

Staying afloat in water is more tiring than it looks, and requires a level of cardiovascular fitness, muscle tone, and coordination. Many children and adults do not possess these skills, due to a lack of fitness, age, or disability. People who possess basic levels of fitness and coordination will consequently adapt to swimming faster than others. Although these things are necessary to become a competent swimmer, don’t be concerned if you struggle with the skills and fitness initially. With regular practice, coordination and fitness can be developed relatively quickly.

           Age

Young children may actually learn faster than older children or adults. Young children do not develop a fear of water until they are almost two, so introducing them to water early on can result in a quicker process of learning to swim. Alternatively, older children or adults may have developed fears or concerns about water, and may be more hesitant. Additionally, children are generally faster learners than adults.

           Consistency And Commitment

Probably the biggest factor in determining how long it takes to learn to swim is the level of commitment and consistency. Undertaking regular lessons with a private teacher will significantly decrease the time needed to become a competent swimmer. Conversely, irregular group lessons will make the learning process longer.

Why are swimming lessons important?

Discover the importance of swimming lessons for children and adults. Learn how Aquastar Swim Schools help you navigate water safely.

There are many reasons why swimming lessons are important, for both children and adults. It is vital that each person has the ability to navigate the water safely, both for their own wellbeing and those around them. Swimming is the only sport that teaches you life saving skills, which is one main reason it is so important. Additionally, there are all the usual benefits of fitness, health, coordination, mental health and socialisation. Read on for a comprehensive list of the different reasons that swimming lessons are important.

           1. Swimming Lessons Save Lives

Water can be dangerous, and it is imperative that adults and children learn the necessary skills to navigate it safely. All water activities carry an inherent risk of drowning, but children are particularly at risk. In 2012-2013, there were 40 deaths of children aged 0 to 14 years by drowning in Australia. Swimming pools were where 90% of the deaths occurred, with almost every death occurring while unsupervised. We can all see that these numbers are unsatisfactory. Swimming lessons are the best way to massively decrease the risk of drowning. Swimming lessons may also give your child, or an adult, the skills they need to assist others in the water when needed. Or, swimming lessons may give a child or adult the knowledge and ability to spot a swimmer in trouble, and know who to ask for help. Both of these reasons demonstrate that swimming lessons should be prioritised above many other activities, due to its lifesaving consequences.

           2. Improve Fitness

Swimming is a great way to become physically fit and healthy, whether an adult or child. Swimming is a great workout because the water acts as resistance for your body to work against. Swimming keeps your heart rate up, while also being low impact. This reduces the stress on your body and is one great reason why swimming is ideal for rehabilitation, the frail, or elderly. Swimming is also an effective method for improving muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and endurance. For keen athletes, swimming is great for maintaining general fitness, muscle strength and versatility in exercise varieties. Perfect for gradual increases in flexibility, coordination, balance and posture, swimming is effective at improving your overall health as well as your fitness.

           3. Mental Health And Confidence

Swimming can benefit you or your child’s mind in a multitude of ways. Firstly, the confidence gained both on land and in water can do wonders for mood, learning abilities and general self confidence. Being comfortable and confident in the water means that you are likely to feel more confident in the wider world. Additionally, the mental health benefits of swimming are very well documented. Many find they experience mental peace when swimming, allowing them to process, think, and relax. This is often described as a meditative state.

           4. A Life Skill

In Australia, swimming is essential for full participation in the community over summer. Swimming lessons ensure you are comfortable and confident to attend days at the beach, on a boat, around a pool or in a creek. This means you will be set for life, and able to enjoy a fully developed social life.

Top 5 water safety tips

Here is a list of 5 water safety tips for being in and around water this year.

With the longer, warmer and sunnier days upon us, we are spending more time around and in the water. It’s more than likely that you have some time booked away at the beach or have organised a pool party with your friends, which is why it is more important than ever, to know some tips for staying safe near the water.

Regardless of whether you’re at the beach, a lake, a river or a blow-up pool set up in your friend’s backyard, water can pose a severe threat to the safety of all. Between July 2019 and June 2020, a tragic loss of 248 lives was due to drowning. Knowing a few safety tips may be the difference between life and death. Other than learning to swim, here is a list of tips to keep you safe around the water this year.

           1. Always Stay Close To Children

Even if your child is a confident swimmer, you must always supervise them. Especially in open water, the conditions and currents can change swiftly. Things can happen in the blink of an eye and ensuring that your child is close by will reduce the risk of harm.

           2. Pay Attention To Signs And The Flags

Before you run into the waves or get into the pool, be mindful of any signage or information that indicates conditions and any potential dangers of swimming in that water. Lifesavers on our beaches set up the flags to ensure you are swimming in the safest possible location on the beach. Be mindful to listen to lifesavers and lifeguards, as they are acting in your best interest!

           3. Check The Depth Of The Pool

Before you go diving into the pool, be aware of the depth of the pool. All pools vary in depths and all vary in how fast they change depth from one end to the other. Water often warps how deep you think the pool is and jumping into too shallow water can result in severe injuries. If you can’t find any signage at your pool, be sure to ask the lifeguard on duty or another staff member.

           4. If You Get Into Trouble, Stay Calm And Signal For Help

This tip goes for all bodies of water, as none are exempt from being dangerous. If you are in a patrolled space (like a pool or a beach), try and remain calm and raise your hand to signal for help. If you are being pulled by a current or rip, do not try to swim against it, rather float with it, or swim towards breaking waves. The most important thing to remember is to not panic.

           5. Learn CPR And First Aid

Knowing how to perform CPR and basic first aid is crucial to being around water. There are many risks that come with swimming, in particular drowning. Knowing basic first aid and how to perform a resuscitation may lead you to save someone’s life.

From pools to rivers, the same safety precautions apply. To put it simply, be aware, be switched on and be prepared! These tips will help you feel more comfortable in knowing that the next time you’re by the water, you can have fun and be safe.

Can you be too old to learn to swim?

Age is no barrier to learning how to swim. With the right tuition, anyone can master this essential skill and enjoy the benefits of swimming.

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but this saying doesn’t always ring true – and it certainly doesn’t apply to adult humans who want to learn to swim! While gaining confidence to feel comfortable in the water at a later age may take a little more time, the truth is it’s never too late to learn to swim and your date of birth should never be a reason not to dive in and learn a new – and very important – skill.

When it comes to learning how to swim, age is no barrier. It’s a skill that anyone can learn with the right tuition… so what are you waiting for?

Don’t Let Fear Hold You Back!

There are many reasons why people don’t learn to swim as children; lack of access to a pool and swim instruction, parents who may fear the water themselves, or even medical reasons. When you haven’t spent time in the water in your formative years, jumping in the deep end as an adult can seem daunting – but it doesn’t have to be. If you’re not confident in your swimming ability and haven’t spent a lot of time around water, fear is only natural; it is there as a preservation mechanism to keep you safe.

Overcoming your fear of the water is completely achievable when you have someone to guide you and help you to gain competence, stroke by stroke. Competence breeds confidence, and once you have confidence in your ability you will find that fear no longer holds you back. Sure, not everyone will have the bravery – or ability and fitness – to take on the Rip Swim from Point Nepean to Points Lonsdale, but we all have the ability to feel at ease in the pool or at a calm beach.

Learning to swim is not only a key safety skill, but one that also unlocks doors to social activities, other sports, fitness and much more!

As an adult who wants to learn to swim, the best thing you can do is enrol in classes at a professional swim school.
